Section A: The name of this organization shall be Students for Life. In identifying the organization outside of Northern Arizona University, the organization may be called NAU Students for Life.
Section A: It shall be the purpose of Students for Life to educate the student body about Pro-Life issues, from conception until natural death, with emphasis on beginning of life issues. Activities include hosting speakers, exhibits and activities, aiding pregnant women, and distributing literature.
Section A: Each student must attend at least one meeting or help the group with at least one event, and must read and understand the Pro-Life Ethics Pledge, before joining the organization.
Section B: Each member must sign the Pro-Life Ethics Pledge and uphold the Pro-Life Ethics Pledge through his or her daily life as a Pro-Life student.
Section C: Membership may be revoked by the officers. Any member or officer may submit a written grievance to the president against a member who is not upholding his or her duty as a Pro-Life student, or is not in good standing. The officers will review the grievance, and vote whether to terminate membership. A majority vote by the officers is required to terminate membership.
Section D: Dues will be determined by the officers and announced at the first meeting of each semester. A student who believes paying the dues would create a significant financial burden may request an exception from the officers, and a majority vote by the officers will grant the member the status of a member whose dues are paid.
Section E: A member in good standing shall be defined as a member who has fulfilled all of the following requirements:
Section F: A member who has fulfilled all the requirements for a member in good standing on the last day of the Spring semester classes shall retain the status of a member in good standing for the duration of classes for the following Fall semester, and for all breaks and semesters between the Spring and Fall semesters. The state of being in good standing will be revoked if the requirements for a member in good standing are not fulfilled during the Fall semester. A member who has fulfilled all the requirements for a member in good standing on the last day fo the Fall semester classes shall retain the status of a member in good standing for the duration of classes for the following Spring semester, and for all breaks and semesters between the Fall and Spring semesters. The state of being in good standing will be revoked if the requirements for a member in good standing are not fulfilled during the Spring semester.
Section G: If a student whose membership status with this group has been previously revoked for any reason wishes to re-join the group, that student must attend a meeting and make an informal speech to the members present regarding reasons for wishing to re-join the group. The present members who are in good standing will vote on whether to allow the student to re-join the group. A majority vote by the members in good standing is required to allow the student to re-join the group.
Section A: The officers of this organization shall consist of six (6) officers, including:
Section 2: Officers must be members in good standing and remain members in good standing for the duration of their term of office. They must also have a minimum 2.25 GPA and maintain a minimum 2.25 GPA for the duration of their term in office.
Section 3: An officer may be removed from office by the members in good standing. Any member or officer may submit a written grievance to the president against an officer who is not upholding his or her officer duties. The members in good standing, not including the officer in question, will review the grievance and vote on whether to remove the officer from office. A two-thirds (2/3) majority vote by the members in good standing is required to remove an officer from office. Following removal, a replacement officer must be elected.
Section 4: A term of office begins on the last day of the spring semester, or the day of appointment to office after the annual election. A term of office ends on the last day of the spring semester, regardless of when an officer’s term began.
Section A: Election of officers shall be held annually at the first meeting of the spring semester. Candidates for office must be NAU students who have been members in good standing for at least one semester prior to the current semester. In cases where there are no candidates for an office who have been members in good standing for at least one semester prior to the current semester, a member may be allowed to be a candidate if he or she has signed the Pro-Life Ethics Pledge and been approved for candidacy by a simple majority of the present members in good standing. Only members in good standing are allowed to vote in the election of officers. On the date of election, the candidates for each office must make a brief speech to the members present. The election shall be a secret ballot, and the candidate with the most votes wins office. If a vacancy occurs in any office between elections, the members in good standing may vote by simple majority to elect a qualified replacement.
Section B: The new elected officers shall not take office until the end of the Spring semester in which they were elected. During the semester in which the new officers are elected, they shall receive training from the officers who still hold the office. At the last meeting of the spring semester, office leadership shall be transferred to the newly elected officers.
Section A: Regular meetings of this organization shall be held at least monthly, but may be held more frequently by the decision of the officers. At least 50% of the members in good standing must be present in order to conduct business. The Secretary/Treasurer will determine at the start of each meeting if a quorum (50%) is present.
Section A: There shall be exactly one Advisor who shall be a member ex officio with no voting privileges. The Advisor must be present at meetings and may veto any actions taken by the group that are not actions that have been voted upon by all present members in good standing. This veto power extends only up to the conclusion of the meeting in which the action in question was decided.
Section B: The Advisor must be full time faculty or staff at NAU and must be Pro-Life. The Advisor must also sign the Pro-Life Ethics Pledge and uphold it for the duration of his/her time as an Advisor for this group.
Section C: The length of an Advisor’s term in office is indefinite, but an Advisor may be removed from office by the choice to resign or by decision of the officers. Any member or officer may submit a written grievance to the president against the Advisor. The officers will review the grievance, and vote whether to terminate membership. A majority vote by the officers is required to terminate membership. This decision cannot be vetoed by the Advisor.
Section D: In the event of a vacancy, a candidate or candidates for the position of Advisor are selected by the officers. A meeting shall be held and the candidate(s) must make a brief speech to the members present. If there is only one candidate, the present members in good standing shall vote for or against the candidate. A majority vote is required to elect the candidate to the position of Advisor. If there are two or more candidates, the present members in good standing shall vote for any of the candidates, or vote to reject all of them. A majority vote is required to elect any candidate to the position of Advisor. A majority vote is also required to reject all candidates.
Section A: Any officer or member in good standing may propose an amendment to the constitution. The proposal must be presented in writing to the Vice President. The Vice President will introduce the proposal at the next meeting, and the present members in good standing will decide if the proposed amendment should be placed on a ballot. A majority vote is required to place the amendment on a ballot. The constitution may then be amended by a two-thirds majority vote of all members in good standing. The Secretary/Treasurer is responsible for counting the number of members in good standing and calculating the required number of votes for a two-thirds majority. Members in good standing may vote in person or by proxy.
The office of Secretary/Treasurer shall be divided into two offices: Secretary and Treasurer.
The duties of the Secretary shall include taking attendance at meetings and events, and checking with the Treasurer to see which members have paid their club dues, all in order to determine which members are in good standing and can vote. The Secretary must also calculate whether or not the majority vote has been achieved. The Secretary shall also take minutes at meetings.
The duties of Treasurer shall include collecting dues, completing and recording financial transactions of the organization, presenting a brief financial report at each meeting, and organizing fund-raising activities with the help of the Executive Director and the Director of Volunteers.
All NAU Students for Life members who are not NAU students shall have all the rights and responsibilities of regular members, except that their names shall not be listed on any group rosters submitted to NAU, as per NAU group regulations.
All NAU Students for Life officers who are not NAU students shall have all the rights and responsibilities of normal officers, except that their names shall not be listed on any group rosters submitted to NAU, as per NAU group regulations. There shall be no more than two (2) non-NAU students as officers per semester.
